In case of community policing the police is required to build ties and work closely with the members of the communities. There are partnerships with the members of the community to solve problems and to proactively address the conditions that give rise to public safety issues. The issues that are typically taken up for community policing are crime, social disorder, and drug trafficking. With community policing there are several ethical dilemmas that occur for the police. These include the police officer not knowing the right course of action, the course of action selected by the police was difficult, and situations in which the wrong course of action was very tempting. For example, the police officer is in the home of a community service leader, when he suspects that drugs may be present in the house. When the leader is in another room, the police officer feels that it is right to rummage through the document cupboard in his absence. What community policing brings about is an increase in the political and social involvement of the police in the community. Also, community policing leads to granting of more discretion and autonomy to the police(a). Community policing increases the number and seriousness of ethical challenges presented to the officer. Common consequences of ethical challenges include loss of control over the officer's action by the department. More serious ethical challenges include corruption and favoritism shown by police officers.
