Youths charged with crimes or status offenses in Michigan may either refute the charges wherein they have the autonomy to be provided a lawyer or plead guilty. If pleading not guilty juveniles are presumed innocent until proven guilty. Therefore, the prosecutor must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the juvenile is guilty when the crime is one that can result in the loss of the juvenile's freedom or prove beyond a preponderance of evidence if the juvenile is charged with a status offense.
