The ultimate goal of any person on trial for a criminal act is to either be found not guilty or stay out of prison or jail. If the person is found guilty, the other goal is to do the least amount of jail or prison time as possible. Before or at this point, the defendant's lawyer makes a respectable decision as to whether or not the prosecution has enough evidence to convict his client.
