A plea bargain gives criminal defendants the opportunity to avoid sitting through a trial risking conviction on the original more serious charge".

There are two main purposes for implementation of plea bargain. The first one is to increase certainty; since judges in most cases have a wide discretion concerning the imposition of sentences; it is often difficult to assess the severity of the sentence or the actual outcome of the trial. It is for this reason that, "either the Crown or the defense may be willing to make certain sacrifices in order to obtain greater certainty and to insure that their most important objective is achieved".
