A crime is a wrongdoing classified by the state or Congress as a felony or misdemeanor. A crime is an offence against a public law.
Three major types of crimes:
Crimes against people- murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault
Crimes against property- burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson
Crimes against public order- at least one person has been arrested, or charged with the commission of the offense, or turned over to the court for prosecution (whether following arrest, court summons, or police notice).
