Affirmative action (AA) is an action or policy that basically prevents discrimination. When a company or organization adopts an AA policy, it does so in order to ensure that all candidates are afforded an equal chance or opportunity for hiring and/or promotion purposes. In organizations over a certain number of employees that have AA policies, it ensures that the employee population includes people that are in classes which are considered protected classes -- individuals that make up minorities due to race, religion, and national origin.
