Problem: Provide a description of the basic history behind the founding of the German Empire in 1871.

    Solution:
The modern German Empire was proclaimed on January 18, 1871 in the Hall of Mirrors at the Royal Palace of Versailles outside of Paris. The proclamation of Empire was the culmination of almost 400 years of effort on the part of the Hohenzollern dynasty going back to the reign of the Great Elector of Brandenburg just before and during the Thirty Years War. The Hohenzollerns had assiduously worked to enlarge their domains and aggrandize their dynasty. They did this by adding Prussia and additional territories to their holdings through both diplomacy and war.
The proclamation of empire itself was a dream of the Prussian King Wilhelm II and it became reality through the efforts of both the Prussian and German Armies and the Prussian Chancellor Prince Otto von Bismarck. Bismarck was a hard-nosed, realistic politician who used his considerable skills to maneuver the states of Europe into a position where they had no choice but to acquiesce in the creation of the Empire.

The actual proclamation was immediately preceded by the so-called Wars of German Unification. They were three in number, the 1864 Danish War, the 1866 Austro-Prussian War, and the 1870-1871 Franco-Prussian War. All were steps in the resulting proclamation. The Danish War pitted the Austrians and Prussian against the Danes for possession and control of the joint Duchy of Schleswig-Holstein, the Austro-Prussian War saw the Austrians ejected from having any role in the affairs of the Germany north and west of the Alps, and the Franco-Prussian War saw a united Germany assert itself as one of the Great Powers of Europe.

The creation of the German Empire was the culmination of not just the dreams of the Hohenzollerns but of many Germans who felt that Germany had been overlooked in the past because of its disunity. Germany was the last major European country to achieve unification. They achieved it through force of arms and it would be abolished through force of arms as well.
