I would think that the event that had the largest magnitude (either positive or negative) during that period was the stock market crash in 1929 and the subsequent great depression. The drop in share prices created bankruptcies and severe macroeconomic difficulties such as business closures, mass layoffs and other economic repression measures. The increase of mass unemployment and the depression was widely regarded as a direct result of the Crash.
