1) What was the military contribution during World War II of the "code talkers" trained at California's Camp Pendleton?

Communication is essential in war. Since the days of knights in armor battlefield commanders have attempted to communicate effectively with the different squads of troops they command. Miscommunication can hinder an advance or can prove disastrous. Because of the importance of communication, leaders have always attempted to intercept enemy messages and catch a glimpse of the enemy's plans without them knowing about it. Benedict Arnold was uncovered as a traitor when George Washington's sentries captured a spy with correspondence from Arnold.

As war became more modern different types of communication were used. By World War II radio waves were used to transmit communication so generals did not need to worry about messages being physically intercepted. However, the enemy was becoming adept at listening in on messages. For this reason codes were developed to hide the true meaning of the message. It was vital for codes to be as unbreakable as possible. As the Germans and Japanese became more proficient at breaking American code, American military leaders were searching for a way to make codes and communication more secure.
