Medieval Europe was a very violent and chaotic place where the peasant was usually caught in the middle of violence that they had not brought on themselves. The peasant was helpless and defenseless in the wars fought among kings. feudal lords and knights. The Catholic Church set out to rectify this situation and to provide some sort of safety for the peasant.

The Peace of God was set up to protect non combatants in times of war. These non combatants were peasants and the clergy. The Peace of God can also be transposed with the Protection of the Church. If you were a non combatant and therefore could not defend yourself, then under the Peace of God you were supposed to be free from experiencing any violence during wartime.
