One major event you might consider is the Berlin Crisis of 1948. The Soviet Union's attempt to gain effective control of the postwar-divided city of Berlin through embargo of food and other supplies prompted the American and British governments to undertake a massive airlift of the needed items. This lasted from June of 1948 until April of 1949, when the Soviet Union abandoned their effort.
