The general social survey is an ongoing national survey that was started in the early 1970s, and has provided a great deal of information concerning the extent of sexual prejudice in the United States. The survey also provides information as to the changing attitudes that Americans have had, and the changing degree of sexual prejudice in the United States during the times in which this data was compiled. According to the data compiled in this survey, in 1973 approximately 61% of Americans were in support of protecting the First Amendment rights of homosexuals in respect to free speech, which includes gays and lesbians, and by 2010 approximately 86% of Americans were in favor of protecting the First Amendment rights of homosexuals in respect to free speech.
