    To find the Thevenin voltage the load (between a and b) is removed and then we have to find the voltage between points a and b.

    To find the voltage between a and b we have to find the current in the 12Ω resistance. The same circuit can be drawn in this way

    The 12 Ω and 8 Ω resistances are in series and this series with equvivalent of 12 + 8 = 20 Ω and

    This is in parallel with 5 Ω ...
