Describe personal attributes of a coach or mentor and how they foster positive change in those they work with.

There is not necessarily a set list of qualities that makes someone a good mentor as opposed to an adequate mentor. It is not necessary to be perfect in order to be a mentor. However, generally speaking, there are some personal qualities that certainly help in the process. Some personal characteristics can make it very difficult for others to accept your advice and input into their lives while other personal characteristics seem to draw others to you. Following is a list of characteristics that are desirable in a mentor and their impact in fostering change in those the mentor works with.

Real: A mentor is authentic, living out what they believe. An old adage would say that they "practice what they preach." The one being mentored sees evidence that the mentor lives what they teach. This establishes confidence in the one being mentored. There are few experiences as devastating as finding out that someone you have looked up to and modeled your own life after is a fake or a charlatan. Having confidence that the mentor is authentic can inspire the follower to confidently persevere even in hard times.
