Ideological Left

"I, however, was troubled by a matter that lay beyond Christopher's view on Iraq, arguable as that was. Once again "the left" was being defined by the habits, opinions, and proclivities of a tiny minority with whom the author had some familiarity." http://prorev.com/eliteleft.htm

***I have noticed that to by the way that those who are the loudest seem to be a very small percentage of the overall population. Somehow the saying "majority rules" never seems to be brought out. However, there is another old saying; "the squeaky wheel gets the grease" would apply here. Sometimes I guess one has to make a loud noise to be heard over the dull roar. ***

"There is an ideological left centered in New York City, which seems barely aware that the socialist factionalism of the 1930s and 1940s is no longer relevant. If these leftists were baseball announcers, they would spend their time debating the relative virtues of Babe Ruth and Ted Williams rather than describing what was happening on the field. They tend to be tedious, trivial, and anachronistically tendentious. They are also, no matter what Hitchens and the Nation magazine say about it, largely irrelevant." http://prorev.com/eliteleft.htm

***No matter my opinion on the matter - I do agree with one thing pertaining to this. Why is it that in a lot of facets the people there tends to major on the minors? They take something that is relevantly small and turn it into a huge ordeal; "mountain out of a mole hill". ***
"The institutional left, much of it headquartered in Washington, is largely engaged in sterile, ritualistic reiteration of what were once vibrant mechanisms for hope. Then there is then what might be called iconographic left, which uses the power of images, sounds and words. It can be as useful as rage against the machine and as stupid as Barbra Streisand. But it is rarely more than the semiotic quartermaster corps of a larger movement. The most important exception is when the images, sounds, or words serve as a catalyst - a writer offering a new idea, a rock musician catching just the right lyrics, and so forth." http://prorev.com/eliteleft.htm
***In the beginning of this - right vs. left - used to be political/governmental. Now it seems that the "government" has leaked into every part of our life. Why is that? We still have the wonderful freedom of speech however, does that automatically mean that you are classified and stereotyped into a category. The analysts need to stop analyzing so much, we still live in a free country and regardless of yours or my beliefs, we can still not agree. That's what is great about this country - we are not forced into one way of thinking. We have the choice - it doesn't mean we have a closed mind - however, that is also a choice in itself. I am not sure I buy into the "...power of images, sounds and words" and classifying it as ideological left.
"Even at their best, these lefts - ideological, intellectual, institutional, and iconographic - represent but a final fraction of what is needed for significant social and political change. The really important left - the idiomatic, colloquial left of people ...
