b. How do authors develop their argument?
c. Is the argument effective? Why or why not?
3) Notice and focus on a particular section or point in the article that gets your attention. (Hint: you may ask, "What intrigues, disturbs or surprises me about this article?"; Another hint: you may want to select two or three sections or points and then choose the best one for your response)
4) Explain why this example matters to multicultural education. Relate your explanation to readings, discussions and other class material, as well as your other background knowledge and experiences.
5) Evaluate ways you can apply what you gained from the article (whether you think the argument is strong or not) to your teaching.
6) Responses should be 600-900 words (2-3pp.) in length, typed, double-spaced and in twelve point font. In addition to your name, course name, instructor name and date, write the APA citation for your article in the spot where a title of a paper usually goes. You may use headings or outline numbers to section off your response if you choose.

• APA citation needs to be corrected
• If an explanation of how the article relates to multicultural education is presented, it is lacking; this includes lack of connections to course material and background knowledge and lack of elaboration

The major argument of the article is the need for students of second language cultures to fit
into the greater society of their current location at time period of their lives. This can have
several meanings; social, linguistic and the ability to learn Standard American English (SAE).
For most students who come from a culture where another language other than English is pre-
dominant, the primary issue is to fit into the social fabric of their existing lifestyle. For
teenagers, this can be the driving force for what they will accept and intend to learn. According
to the article, "Language learning and the definition of ones' social, cultural, and racial identity",
the student who was a part of this study lied about their cultural background to relate to their
peers.
Linguistically, language is often an identifier of culture and societal norms. This can be
