I am an advisor to the US Federal Trade Administration in charge of doing background research that will be used for trade negotiations by policy makers. The US is in the process of engaging in negotiations with countries in Middle and South America to explore expansion of the North American Free Trade Agreement [NAFTA].
I have been asked to provide a brief memorandum that outlines the three main advantages and disadvantages of expanding NAFTA.
It is important to choose the next NAFTA members carefully. They should be economies of governments that are developed to the point at least of Mexico's level. Their governments should be friendly democracies with a history of good relations with the US.
