In the past, corporations and industry were largely the cause of global warming. Industrialization, fossil fuel burning, and land use change, usually facilitated by corporations, are some of the main causes of greenhouse gas emissions (Oreskas, 2004). However, ever since the problem of global warming has come to light, several corporations have tried to change their processes in order to meet environmental standards and for healthy media attention. However, there has been different responses from different companies, and the ones that are moving towards environmentally friendly practices are doing so modestly and not drastically.
Trans-Atlantic responses by multinational corporations, especially in the oil industry, to the prospect of international controls of greenhouse gases have been different. U.S companies, such as Chevron and Exxon have challenged climate science and have lobbied against mandatory emission controls (Levy and Kolk, 2002). However, BP and Shell, large European companies, have accepted the scientific basis for global warming and have supported the Kyoto protocol in the past and have announced plans for renewable energy (Levy and Kolk, 2002).
