One of the most important ways by which the government has supported the computer software industry has been by providing a great deal of government contracts to companies within this industry, in order to provide computer software for civilian government operations such as the computer software that is utilized within the U.S. Congress and the Department of the Interior for example. The government has also supported the computer software industry by purchasing a great deal of computer software for military purposes within the Department of Defense, such as the software utilized in missile defense systems. The government should not put time limits on a patent due to the fact that maintaining patents for indefinite periods of time does not harm consumers in any way, nor does it hinder competition.
