Strategies:

Mayor Paul Schell had a number of options he could implement to address homeless issue in Seattle. The King County Community Homelessness Advisory Committee had developed strategies that could be used to approach and combat homelessness. The first strategy that the committee established was that the City could improve maintenance but not increase existing shelter capacity. This strategy was developed since the Committee wants additional funds to be used in other services and housing. This strategy may improve the condition of current shelters but it will not reduce the number of people turned away due to inadequate housing. This strategy cannot achieve the Mayor's pledge to remove homeless families and single women from the streets.

Other strategies developed by the committee include assisting people in permanent housing and following clients as they progress throughout the continuum of care. The Committee also suggests that he city should provide sub groups of the homeless who are underserved with resources. The fourth strategy established was the need to develop a network of homeless services that is client centered and properly coordinated.

The strategies developed by King County Community Homelessness Advisory Committee mainly focus on maximizing efficiency and maintaining the housing shelters but do not address the need to take up more homeless individuals into the shelters.

However, Mayor Schell had different strategy that include the need to increase housing capacity in order to successfully assist all homeless families with children or single women from the streets. He also intends to convene a housing summit so that adequate strategies can be developed to address the demand for affordable housing.
