Integrative Role of Learning
Not what you're looking for?
? How does the social and organizational context of learning help to provide an understanding of how learning plays an integrative role between knowledge management and dynamic capabilities?
Knowledge management (KM) is the most influential resource in organizations today, it consists of the collective cognitive efforts of all primary organizational stakeholders. "Learning how to manage organizational knowledge has many benefits, some of which are readily apparent; others are not. These benefits may include leveraging core business competencies, accelerating innovation and time to market, improving cycle times and decision making, strengthening organizational commitment, and building sustainable competitive advantage" (Fernandez, Gonzalez, Sabherwal, 2004; Davenport and Prusak, 1998).
Many theorists believe that individuals in pursuit of professional development must strive to become lifelong learners, in fact being receptive to learning new concepts and processes is a prerequisite for competitive advantage. "Dewey's philosophy, known as instrumentalism, holds that knowledge is a function of inquiry. Truth is an instrument for solving problems, and hence changes as problems and situations change. According to this view, truth, being devoid of any transcendent quality, cannot be fully discerned in the absence of experience. Pure thought or reason is incomplete of itself, and is completed only through experience which informs it, confirming or denying its validity (Childs, Larson, Goldsmith, and LaRue, 2006). As Dewey states, "An ounce of experience is better than a ton of theory simply because it is only in experience that any theory has vital and verifiable significance" (Childs et al, 2006).
