Primary data means that you as the researcher are collecting the data by yourself first hand. This is opposed to secondary data where you research previous research and use that data in your research.

Primary data has many advantages, as you are able to authenticate the data, since you are the one that collected it. If you are relying on a research study you found in some database, you are never sure how accurate the data is. Primary data allows you to select your own variables, conduct your own data collection, and analyze the data in the manner that you wish.
