What are the steps espoused by the textbook (or instructor) for formal hypothesis testing?
Explain why the sequence is important?
What might happen if the hypothesis test is performed before the researcher has decided on the significance level?

The five steps I teach are:
1. formulate the hypothesis - this is what you are trying to prove
2. create the null hypothesis - this is the hypothesis you are testing. It is the exact opposite of the hypothesis. If it is true, we assume the hypothesis is not and if it is not true we assume the hypothesis is true.
3. choose level of significance - how sure we want to be the answer is correct
4. calculate the test - perform the calculations of the test on the null hypothesis using ...
