With respect to the book ""Be, Know, Do written by Frances Hessselbein and General Eric K. Shinseki" , the book describes the stand of the Army on leadership. It addresses the issue of training individuals into soldiers and developing them into leaders. That standpoint of the book is that the principles of leadership taught, accepted and practiced in the US army are proffered as relevant to other organizations in the world. The book asserts that these principles are applicable to government agencies, businesses, non-profit organizations and other civilian organizations. What the book asserts is that the army develops more leaders that those found in other organizations. The book lauds the methods used by the current leaders of the army that use the training manuals of the army and personal example to develop leaders. The book asserts that army leaders uphold values and have integrity. The book purports to guide future leaders to use army principles and develop leaders.
My position on the book is that it describes the leadership training and style used in the army very well. However, the claim that this style is appropriate for all organizations and for all situations is not acceptable. For example, by "know" the book proposes that the leader must have the knowledge of interpersonal skills, conceptual skill, technical skills and tactical skills. This is not true in all situations. For example in case of participative leadership the leader involves others in decision making and the leader may not have each of the four skills described. Rather, these skills may be distributed in a team and the challenge for the participative leader is to involve others in decision making. Similarly, in case of "do" the ...
