RFID is viewed by many to be the most important technological innovation taking place in supply chain management today. The reason for this is that RFID tags can be placed on products, product packing, cartons, boxes, or containers and it becomes possible to track the object bearing the RFID tag through scanners or through RFID readers. The RFID tags emit radio frequency waves that enable an exchange of data between the reader and electronic tag. When the RFID technology is used there are several advantages for the supply chain. The buyer is able to track the location of a particular package or of the entire consignment. If required the transportation process can be speeded up to ensure that a stock out does not take place or the packages can be combined into a bulk to ensure the most economical transportation.
