Let's take a closer look at Vroom's Expectancy Theory. I also provided three extra links for further reading at the end of this response, as some authors explain the theory differently and it often wise to read several sources to get a clearer understanding of the theory.
1. What is Expectancy Theory?
The Expectancy Theory is a cognitive theory proposed by Canadian Victor Vroom, who attempted to explain how individuals make decisions regarding various behavioral options. Vroom's Expectancy Theory "assumes that behavior results from conscious choices among alternatives whose purpose it is to maximize pleasure and to minimize pain" (http://www.sayeconomy.com/expectancy-theory-by-victor-vroom/), and is based on two premises:
A. When deciding among behavioral options, individuals select the option with the greatest motivation forces (MF).
