I. Define the ethical problem
A. What is the situation? (Identify what you actually know about the situation from reading the case; state the facts)
The ethical problem is that SUVs, sports utility vehicles are guzzlers of fuel and environment polluters.
The second problem is that there is a possibility that the SUVs are not safe vehicles.
Still, the American people are interested in purchasing the SUVs because of its better performance, function, larger space, desire to go off-roading and to be stylish.
B. Identify the key people in the case study and why they are important.
There are three sets of people who are important. First, the owners and the potential owners of SUVs they represent the demand for the SUVs. Second, the manufacturers of the SUVs, they represent the supply of SUVs, these manufacturers have experienced huge profits in the sales of SUVs. They do not want ot let this opportunity pass for environmental reasons. Every company may not want to quit on moral grounds. Ford is an exception. Third, the government can set strigent rules about the making and standards for SUVs.
II. Data analysis
A. What issues are at stake? (Identify issues in the cases that link to course content covered in the readings.
The issue that SUVs are covered under lenient government fuel efficiency standards. In addition, the greatest source of greenhouse gases are motor vehicles.
The issue is that there are serious concerns about the safety standards of SUVs and the extent to which they are safe needs to be examined.
B. What information do you have? What information do you still need? Where/how can you find it? (Identify the information you have. Identify what information is potentially missing. State your assumptions about why the information is important. State your strategy for retrieving the information)
The energy department has give a list of gas guzzlers but we also need the miles per gallon information about the cars. The assumption is that the same cars that show the worse gas guzzlers may not be the worse miles per gallon. This information can easily be found from testing agencies ...
