There are serious ethical concerns about Wal-Mart's policy on women. Wal-Mart's policies and business practices have been criticized for gender discrimination. Women have been subject to gender discrimination during the hiring process and at work(a). One example is the case of Wal-Mart v. Dukes which was a discrimination suit representing more than 1.5 million women employee of Wal-Mart. According to the National Organization for Women, many female employees at Wal-Mart have been paid less than male coworkers. According to the NOW, in 2001 female workers earned $5,200 less per year on average than male workers. The company paid those who had hourly jobs $1.16 less per hours than men in the same position. From the deontological ethical point of view it is the duty of Wal-Mart to pay equal pay to women for work that is equivalent to that done by men. The action of paying women workers less than that paid to men is unethical from the deontological point of view.
According to NOW Female employee who held salaried positions at Wal-Mart were paid $14,500 per year less than what was paid to men in the same position.
