The famine of 1998 in Sudan was a major disaster. The worst hit area was the Bahr El Gazal in Southern Sudan, where almost 250,000 people were killed. Almost 2.5 million people were at risk of starvation as of July 1998 due to this famine.

Causes of the famine:

Let us summarize the causes one by one:

1) The major cause of the famine has been the human right abuses by all parties engaged in civil war in the country. The famine in Bahr El Ghazal came into effect due to a drought caused by El Nino that laid ground for the natural conditions from which human violence and represession gave way to the famine. However, the famine was actually a consequence of human action.

Some of the major human rights abuses that led to this famine included raids by Muraheleen militia, making people poor and weak by theft of crops, gains and burning of source of livelihood such as crops and homes. Children and women were abducted and seized as booty. ...
