Progressive discipline is the process whereby corrective steps or measures are used by organizations to address continuous undesirable employee issues after he or she has been provided with reasonable opportunity to address them. The concept of progressive discipline entails applying the least severe action that is deemed necessary to address the undesirable issue, and when the issue persists despite prior corrective steps, it is deemed necessary to increase the severity of the discipline bestowed on the employee. An example of progressive discipline is when an employee's negative behavior influences the quality of their work and performance and in some cases those of his or her colleagues in the workplace. The supervisor of the employee in collaboration with the HR manager or director could decide to employ disciplinary actions to address the employee's behavior.
