Three different projects using grid computing are as follows. The first is the World Community Grid project. This project uses idle time of computers around the world to benefit the world or the society. The research projects of World Community Grid projects have analyzed problems related to HIV, dengue, and muscular dystrophy.
The second project using grid computing is the field of math. The project is the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search. This grid uses the idle time of computers across the world to find new world-record-size Mersenne primes. Till now 48 Mersenne primes have been found. It is expected that project will be of great value to mathematics.
The third project using grid computing is the field of academic research. The Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Networking Computing allows a computer owner to contribute computing power to projects doing research in many scientific areas. This grid supports academic projects.
Grid computing is the harnessing computing power from different sources and using them in harmony to achieve a specific goal. The considerable power of grid computing actually decreases the time required significantly to accomplish the goal. The computer resources are located at different locations but grid computing is the federation of these resources. Grid computing means applying the computing resources of several computers in a network to achieve a single objective at the same time. The software of grid computing divides and farms out pieces of program to several computers. It is a form of distributed computing.
