The Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA) entitles employees of not more than 12 workweeks of unpaid and job-protected leave in year or 12-month period. It also requires group health benefits to be maintained during the leave period. The FMLA can be applied for one or more of the following purposes: the care for an employee's immediate family member (parent, spouse, son, or daughter) due to serious condition; the birth of a daughter or son upon which the employee needs to care for such daughter or son; when the employee's son or daughter is placed for adoption/foster care; the inability to work because of a serious health condition which hinders an employee to perform his/her duties and responsibilities.
