Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) started as a group of developing countries which has over the time become a strong player in regional and international landscape. ASEAN has been a successful regional organization in Asia and Pacific. The integration of ASEAN countries would increase coordination and cooperation among member countries to effectively address increasing pressures of globalization and pressures built up by non-ASEAN countries. The ASEAN charter aims to promote integration through one vision, one identity, and one community. The charter strengthens ASEAN decision making and enforcement. Such binding in the past has led to problems of instability and cohesiveness. If the charter discovers that a member country is not abiding to its decisions, an immediate resolution is reached at.
ASEAN focuses on intergovernmental approach where member countries cooperate in specific fields while still maintaining their individual sovereignty. The ASEAN integration will strengthen it as a regional player and thereby offset the dominance of neighboring non-ASEAN powers. Integration would also improve regional cooperation efforts in Asia-Pacific and ASEAN can set out for other East Asian partnerships.
