Theoretically, NAFTA was developed as a mechanism by which to foster free economic trade between Canada, Mexico, and United States, in a manner in which many of the terriffs that are imposed during normal economic trade between nations would be eliminated between these nations. The elimination of many tariffs in the trade between these nations is tremendously beneficial to trade, yet there are other considerations that may negate the benefits received by the reduction in tariffs.
