Which form of hepatitis causes appreciable death loss in pregnant women?
Reports show that hepatitis in pregnant women most commonly occur on the second and third trimester of gestation (Roger and Ede, 1981).Unfortunately, those women infected with Hepatitis on the third pregnancy have poor prognosis which means, chances are, those women could die or be seriously affected (Mahmoud, 1993) including their babies (Everson, 1998).
During outbreaks or in a clinical series of sporadic infections, deaths in women due to HEV infection may occur from 10% to 42% (Kane et al., 1984). These deaths are usually associated with hepatic encephalopathy and disseminated intravascular coagulation (Purdy et al., 1994; Tsega, Hansson, Krawczynski, & Nordenfelt, 1992).
