The immune response is generally very effective at controlling fungal infections, therefore it eliminates pathogenic fungi when the begin to grow in the body and cause disease. However in immunocompromised patients, fungi either from outside the body can colonize, or the low level of fungi that exists as a commensal in the body can outgrow and cause disease, unfettered by the immune response.
