The objective of a study is to understand the causal relationship between economic performance and voting behavior in presidential elections. For example, if we want to study the extent to which president Trump would be rewarded or punished in 2020 due to the prosperity or ill-health of statewide economies during his first term in office. Data for all states were collected. Presidential vote percentages were collected for 2016 and 2020. Two indices of economic performance were available for each state:
1) Percentage change in the Index of Leading Economic Indicators
2) The percentage change in real disposable per capita income during his first term
The intent of the study would be to determine if the two independent variables predict Trump's vote total for 2020?
