Question Four. The following values are the number of months that individuals were not serving time during the previous year (out of jail). Note that a value of 0 indicates that a subject was in jail for the entire year. Values for 35 subjects are as follows:
5 10 0 5 11 0 0
12 0 3 7 0 8 12
0 3 12 12 12 0 12
8 9 12 8 10 12 8
0 1 12 11 12 6 9
Compute the mean, median, and the mode. Which would be the best estimate of central tendency for these data? Explain your answer.
Question Five. The numbers below are total delinquency offense case counts for various districts and counties for the state of New Mexico and Hawaii. Compute the mean, median and mode for each state.
NM: 383,3683,425,148,751,354,291,103,264,140,639,343,384
HI: 608,3048,368,111
Question Seven. The following data reflect the number of arrests for a birth cohort of juveniles. Find the mean, median, variance, standard deviation, and mode for the arrest data for these individuals:
0 0 0 4 2 4 12
7 2 1 3 0 1 0
3 11 0 1 1 0 2
Remove the highest three and lowest three scores from the data, and do the calculations again. What happens to the mean and the mode? What happens to the median? Why is this so?
