Columbus "discovered" the Americas and led his group in exploration of the new continents found. However, not all of the people think his exploration was a good thing. Columbus brought with him violence against the indigenous populations. His men captured and slaughtered those he found who resisted. This would most likely include most natives who would not want to be subjected.
In his effort to turn the natives toward Christianity, he instead committed crimes of violence. His efforts to civilize the new land instead created a type of slavery, which became the forerunner of the slavery trade that was eventually so identified with the Americas and the Caribbean Islands. He attempted to find riches to return to Europe and helped instead to wipe out whole populations of villages when they would not cooperate with him. Additionally, it was the Europeans that brought with them diseases that killed many populations of natives as well. Many consider that he did not discover, but conquered the New World. He did not want to civilize, but enslave the populations. He practiced a form of racism in doing so.
