The learning model states that psychological disorders results from the reinforcement of abnormal behavior. The psychodynamic model proposes that such disorders are caused from maladaptive defenses against unconscious conflicts.

Less severe mental health problems are known as "disorders" or "syndromes" rather than "illness".
