(1) Atypical antidepressant (e.g. SSRI, Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil)

• Targets neurotransmitters either alone or in combination with other drugs
• Wellbutrin (Atypical antidepressant) blocks neurotransmitters such as dopamine and norepinephrine.
• Trazodone, Cymbalta, Effexor affect block both norepinephrine and serotonin (or SNRIs).
• Side effects vary according to the drug
• Atypical antidepressant may cause symptoms such as (nausea, fatigue, weight gain, sleepiness, nervousness, dry mouth and blurred vision
• Wellbutrin (also known as bupropion) less likely to cause side effects
• More energizing that other antidepressants

(2) Tricyclic (TCA) antidepressants
• inhibiting the brain's reuptake or serotonin and norepinephrine
• Partially inhibit the reabsorption of dopamine.
• Cause more side effects than other classes of antidepressants
• Drowsiness is a common effect
• Cause withdrawal symptoms

(3) Monoamine (MAOI) antidepressants

• combination of SSRIs and MAOI are life threatening
• MAOIs have severe interactions with foods, drinks and other medications
• Can cause severe high blood pressure, stroke or heart attack
• Not prescribed as a first line drug
