Informed consent is essentially a notification, generally in the form of a document, that a doctor gives to a patient prior to surgical procedures so the patient is aware of the potential risks they may encounter. Therapists use them as well when undergoing new treatment such as biofeedback or a type of therapy that addresses social phobias and intense anxiety disorders. In most situations, an informed consent is necessary and used however, it is up to the doctor or therapist to determine when it is and isn't necessary.
