The resistance of the first device is 12 ohms, the resistance of the second device is 4 ohms, and the voltage developed by the generator is 40 V. What is the magnitude of the current flowing through the first device?

Wherever two resistances are connected in parallel, they are connected to the same potential difference (different currents flow).
But if in series, they are having the same current through them.
Here the devices are connected in parallel. Thus the current through them will vary.
Here we will use Ohm's law again. That is, R = V/I or I = V/R
I = 40/12 = 3.33 A
