Law of inertia

Start a ball rolling down a bowling alley and you'll find it moves slightly slower with time. Does this violate Newton's law of inertia? Defend your answer.

Solution This solution is FREE courtesy of BrainMass!

The law of inertia assumes no forces acting on the body, or at least that the sum of all the forces acting on the body is zero.

Therefore it is not violated by the bowling ball, as there is the rolling friction which makes the sum of all forces to be non-zero.
