The major legal systems are Common Law, Civil Law, and Sharia Law. Common law is borne out of the principles associated with Roman Law and is practiced in countries such as the United States, London, Australia and other Westernized countries in Europe such as Germany. Civil Law is also a derivative of Roman Law but differs from Common Law significantly in areas such as guilty until proven innocent. Countries such as Italy and France practice Civil Law. Sharia law is practiced by Islamic countries and differs entirely from Common and Civil law as it is predicated upon the use of religion as the foundation of law.

Law is regulations and rules that govern society. Criminal, civil, and legislative laws are created to ensure that order and justice is provided in any society.

Laws are subjective to those enforcing them and unfortunately it isn't uncommon for the original intent of a law to become perverted by humans. Examples include the current drug legislation in America, which has resulted in millions of ruined lives and incarcerations for drugs such as marijuana, which is infinitely less dangerous than other drugs such as tobacco and alcohol, both of which are legal.
