This case captured the public's attention because at came on the heels of another racially charged public case involving an unarmed Black teenager who was gunned down by a white man, the Travon Martin case. In both of these cases, an historically discriminated against and mistreated race of people in America, Black people, felt that these cases were the final straw for what they and the United Nations have termed as wholescale injustice and violence committed against the Black community in the United States. With a history that spans 400 years of racist and violent actions against this community, people felt there would be real change when the first Black President was elected in the U.S. Unfortunately, all they saw in their eyes was the same type of military policing and racial injustice that they have experienced for hundreds of years, and when a civilian who was stalking an innocent teenager in his father's neighborhood was acquitted of his cold-blooded murder, this was the starting point for what occurred in the Michael Brown case.
