The Bextra case illustrates a "qui tam" lawsuit by one sales representative of pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, John Kopchinski, blew the whistle on Bextra. Bextra was valdecoxb, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug used in osteoarthritis and painful menstruation. This drug was approved in 2001 by the FDA but was withdrawn from the market in 2005 when risks of heart attack and stroke were reported. One of the subsidiaries of Pfizer was found guilty of marketing four drugs including Bextra with the intention of misleading or defrauding.
