A. How to Avoid Plagiarism - Plagiarism is the practice of claiming, or implying, original authorship, or incorporating material from someone else's written or creative work in whole or in part, into ones own, without adequate acknowledgment. The written or creative work which is plagiarized may be a book, article, musical score, film script, or other work. Unlike cases of forgery, in which the authenticity of the writing, document, or some other kind of object, itself is in question, plagiarism is concerned with the issue of false attribution. (1)

In other words, plagiarism means copying or paraphrasing material without indicating the source. It is literary theft and as such it is a form of academic dishonesty. Generally speaking, the simplest way to avoid plagiarism is to footnote material gathered from other authors. It is not necessary to footnote common knowledge, such as the fact that Choate Rosemary Hall is located in Wallingford, CT. However, it would be important to indicate the source of the information that 847 students attended that school in 1998; or, 98% of Choate students get into the college of their first choice. (2)
