Hello,
The greatest challenges facing these three careers are very similar. Agricultural economics concerns the most politically sensitive area of government economic policy. The agricultural industry in any developed country is the most protected and immune from rational economic policy.
Environemental economics concerns another very sensitive area, but in this case it is the target of many non-rational political activist non-government organizations that can make rational economic management of the environment near impossible.
International economics is based on the anglo-american concept of a free market, individual consumer/investor-centric world based on liberal economic thought. This concept of the world is not shared by most countries who would prefer to follow a state-central mercantilist policy that goes against everything a modern economist would support.
I would think a career in these three areas must be very frustrating as the decision makers and the most influential players are not rational economists, all trained in the liberal academic tradition.
Hope this helps!
