Operation Geronimo was carried out on May 2nd, 2011, when a US force ferried by helicopters raided a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, and killed Osama Bin Laden. The same day President Obama announced that the US intelligence and military had killed the al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in a raid conducted in Pakistan. Operation Geronimo was wrong because President Obama turned into a judge, jury, and executioner. This is a rubbishing of the rule of law. There would be no trial, no due process of law, and no cross-examination of witnesses. Osama bin Laden was executed without a judge giving him capital punishment. This is an invitation to murder a person by pronouncing that he was a terrorist mastermind. If OBL violated the law, he should be judged fairly. Moreover, it is merciless to kill an individual without giving him a chance to explain and a chance to change. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, in the Charter of the United Nations, does not allow the killing of individuals such as OBL by states such as the United States (a). The declaration has "Principles on the Effective Prevention and Investigation of Extra-Legal, Arbitrary, and Summary Executions" does not allow killings such as those of OBL.

Operation Geronimo violates international humanitarian law because at that time there was no armed conflict between Al Qaeda and the US. When OBL was killed, Al Qaeda has not declared an organized armed group as international humanitarian law defines. Under international law, the killing ...
